BlackBerry Love
Posted on 01.28.10 to Personal, Technology, Travels by JoanTimes like these, I really love my BlackBerry. I can tweet, upload photos, email, chat and blog. Only thing I can’t really do is post my flickr pictures on my blog via the BlackBerry browser because of the way the mobile flickr page is rendered, and I can’t get the code of the picture to put in the post.

Nonetheless, armed with free wifi, I’m surfing in the comforts of my bed in this really lovely B&B at Kota Kinabalu. It’s really rare that one gets free wifi anywhere, much less in a B&B. On top of that, my room’s right above the router, as duly informed by the receptionist.
I must say, DeGalleria Hotel is real value for money. For MYR88 a night (approximately SGD36), I get a really clean room, hot shower, flat screen TV and internet. The room’s really small though – the closet door can’t even open fully and it’s a squeeze to bathe. The floor mat can’t even be laid out fully in the bathroom!
One thing I forgot to do research on before coming, is where to go for good food in the town area. I focussed so much on the climb that I forgot to pack PJs for the two nights spent not on the mountain. If anyone could let me know where I could go for phenomenal meals here, it would be great.
Alright. Bed-time! Got to be up early for the climb tomorrow! Wish me luck – I’m getting butterflies in my belly now.

This might be a tad too late but:
1) Head for that place where all the locals go to for seafood. I forget it’s name but it’s the large, covered, outdoor eating area where they hold the free cultural dances at night. The seafood is amazing and fabulously cheap. We had fun sucking out sea snails from their shells!!!
2) For something more upmarket, there is an indoor Chinese restaurant right by the sea. Your B+B host will know which one I’m talking about.
3) We went to a mamak style eatery (think large room, with lots of tables and whirring ceiling fans) and had lots of fun ordering local Malaysian/Malay delicacies. The Sabahans speak with a slightly different Bahasa Malaysia and I had great fun re-brushing mine on that trip :)PS: Bring chocolate bars eg Snickers for your climb up. Something lightweight yet yummy. I rewarded myself with a bite at every pit stop. It was the only thing that kept me going! Don’t forget to tote an extra one for your guide too :):)
Joan, in KK check out the Filipino market. Find the rows of bbq stalls selling fresh (and very cheap) gilled seafood. A massive tuna steak, two squids, rice and drinks set us back $7SGD per person. It’s SOO GOOD. When you get to the stall of your choice, point to your choice, and take a seat. Make your own sauce using the condiments in front of you. Water is safe to drink but you can order drinks. They will ask you if you want rice. Eat and be happy. HEH.
