Handy Manny’s Motorcycle Adventure

I admit that I often use the television as a babysitter, when I need some time away from being a mummy to work. There are some days of the week that Clare doesn’t go to her grandparents’ because I just want to be at home with her. So she indulges in Playhouse Disney (Channel 34 on StarHub cable) when I rush to finish up some work in between cooking, household chores and spending some time with her.

One of her favourite shows to watch is Handy Manny. There are a few shows that I like on that Channel for their various educational values: Higglytown Heroes for the various occupations introduced, Words World for spelling and pronunciation, Mickey Mouse for deduction skills, and Handy Manny for solution skills.

For those not in the know, Handy Manny’s protagonist is a fix-it man called Manny Garcia, who lives in Sheetrock Hills. He has a toolbox of talking tools that help him in his various fixing adventures.

I like how they weave in a little adult humour with the other lead, Kelly. Kelly owns a hardware shop that Manny buys his supplies from. And she always seems to have what he needs, no matter how unusual his request is. Which would inevitably lead to one of the tools making some sarcastic remark about how he wasn’t surprised at all. I think also, there is a hint of romance between the two characters.

Each episode usually lasts a few minutes, that goes on air in half an hour blocks. However, come Friday, 29 Jan at 10am, Season 3 of the show premieres with a special hour-long screening of ‘Handy Manny’s Motorcycle Adventure’.

Clare and I have both been lucky enough to watch the preview. When I told her that we were going to watch a special episode of Handy Manny, she immediately asked, “Is it the Motorcycle Adventure?” which left me speechless for a while because I wasn’t even aware that she would know and anticipate these things. When I replied in the affirmative, she was bouncing off the walls and could hardly sit still for a photo.

In summary, ‘Handy Manny’s Motorcycle Adventure’, Manny decides to take a road trip to his family reunion on his motorcycle. Of course, an adventure wouldn’t be an adventure without unexpected twists and turns that include almost running out of gas, lost tools and making friends along the way. A strong running theme of the show too, is the concept of family and relationships.
