30 List: #4 Get a Visible Tattoo (well, sort of)
Posted on 12.03.09 to 30 List, Personal by JoanGetting a visible tattoo is something that I thought long and hard over. The simple reason being: my dad’s very traditional and I know that it’s something that he DOES. NOT. LIKE. AT. ALL.I know that I am almost 30, and that I am my own person, but you know, we pick our battles. If I don’t really have to have it, I suppose it doesn’t hurt to not get it. Apart from that, there is the whole stigma it carries in society and I’m not sure if it is something I want to put myself through.
However, we can always make compromises right? So, I settled for a UV tattoo instead — it’s supposed to be invisible and will only show up under UV light. So I get what I want and my dad doesn’t have to deal with me being inked, if you get what I mean. Then some of you may ask, “Why get one in the first place, if you can’t see it?” To which my reply would be: I just want it for me.
I wanted two elements that make up what my life is right now: Clare and my work. So I got Clare’s name inked on my left wrist (closer to my heart), and my logo (which was designed by the wonderful Jussi) on my right wrist. (And for those who don’t realise, my logo is designed to look like aperture blades of the camera.)

Getting inked: it hurt more at certain bits. I find that as I grow older, my threshold and bravery for pain has dipped considerably.

Showing how the tattoo looks after the first round.

The splotchy bits was just inked that was smeared, which was easily washed away after.

Clare wanted my name on her wrist too.

And she proceeded to ask for a turtle on her ankle. I hope she asks me for advice before she runs off to get permanently inked next time!

The healing process of my tattoo. Clare’s name is practically invisible, while there are some scars left on my right wrist. That’s because I keep on accidentally rubbing my wrist against things and the scabs peel off before they heal.
My dad found out about it over the weekend when he saw the scars on my wrist and thought I tried slitting them! So I suppose, a UV tattoo seems not as bad in relation. He’s obviously not entirely happy about it, but it’s not colour inked so I am still alive for now.
For the person who loves reporting to my parents about the stuff I write on my blog, you can save your breath this time because they all know about it.
DISCLAIMER: Kids, do not try this at all unless you are of age, have thought through getting a tattoo carefully and that your parents will not disown you.

May i ask where you got this UV tattoo done? Would you recommend the place? My husband is thinking of getting a tattoo just because, and this seems like an interesting option!
Hi Justina, I got my tattoo done at Body Decor @ Hereen. I got my first tattoo done by the same guy too. It is an interesting option, but you guys should do your research on UV ink first. It’s not 100% safe and no one really knows what kind of side effects there are.
hi joan, i’ve been reading your blog since not sure when…am terence’s friend, he did the photos on my wedding about 5yrs ago, we met up once before my wedding, u may not remember me…anyway, i enjoy reading your blog very much :) thot of dropping by to say hi…and am jus curious, why dun u jus block off ‘the person who loves reporting stuffs to your parents’?? i absolutely detest people who do such things…btw, very cool tatoo!
Hey Rach, thanks for writing! Yes, I remember you. :) I can’t specifically block the person, but it doesn’t bother me. That’s because I don’t write stuff I don’t want people to find out at all on my blog. It just annoys me that the person just likes doing it.
