Don’t Wear Fur. Wear A Chihuahua.

Jaws has been living with us for a few months now and I have this massive love-hate relationship with her. On most accounts, she is very adorable, loyal and protective. Underneath all that bite is a very soft and timid dog. But when her idiosyncrasies kick in, such as thinking that she is in trouble (when she is not) and getting unnecessarily aggressive, it really makes me wonder if I ought to be putting her up for adoption. After all, getting a third dog was never part of the plan, since handling two dogs and one kid is a feat for two adults already.
That being said though, she has made progress in leaps and bounds. She does seem very happy to be here in the house and has created an odd love-triangle among my dogs — Thunder likes Jaws and Dinky; Jaws doesn’t like Thunder but likes Dinky; Dinky is ambivalent towards both but has very little patience for Jaws.
I’m rather fond of Jaws because I sometimes see myself in her.
However, what I like most about that dog is that she’s brought out the compassion in my daughter. After having been a casualty of Jaw’s snapping a few times, Clare will always almost immediately go up to Jaws and hug her, saying, “I love you, Jaws.” That, to me, is a pretty amazing character trait for a 3-year-old to possess.
