HP TouchSmart
Posted on 02.05.09 to Product Reviews, Technology by JoanThere are some days when I feel really crap and would wish that my life was different. That I was a different person, with a different personality and surrounded by all things different. But I get by when I think of all the wonderful things going in my life — a family who loves me, a great kid, a home to live in and a business to grow.
Then there are days when I feel extra special when I am given opportunities or recognised for something. Yesterday was one such day, when the good people at HP brought over their newest desktop, the TouchSmart.

You may recall sometime back, I was passed the HP Mini, which is a great carry around netbook for surfing, checking emails and chatting.
The TouchSmart on the other hand, is a giant media centre and a great tool for me to fulfil my secret agent fantasies. Its main feature is the beautiful touch screen. It works like an oversized iPhone with all the finger-swishing back and forth. Navigating through the menu options is very much like how the dudes in Mission Impossible work.
The HP TouchSmart software is very similar to the Mac environment, as in, it’s very intuitive and easy to use. For example, the Music software is like iTunes and you can browse your albums by the cover, like Cover Flow. Thus, switching between my Mac and the HP is fairly easy. Like I said, it’s like using a giant iPhone!
My thinking friend Jussi asked, before I got the computer, if it was practical to have a touch screen computer because you just keep on getting finger prints on it. While the screen has been treated to not stain easily, some smudges are inevitable and I find myself fastidiously cleaning it whenever I shut it down at night. LOL! But seriously, this computer really takes the navigating experience to a whole new level.
I like that it comes installed with Vista, an operating system I’m not familiar with. It’ll help me understand when people discuss the merits (or not) between Vista and XP.
I really do like this computer with its 25.5″ HD monitor. So much so, I’ve been working at home so that I can sit here and soak up in it’s geekery goodness. I mean, who can resist the ambient light (you can change the colour to any one you want!).
Other features of the TouchSmart:
- Blu-ray DVD player
- Ultra sleek blue tooth keyboard
- Built-in webcam and microphone
- 5-in-1 memory card reader (although it doesn’t have a CF slot)
- 5 USB ports
- ENERGY STAR and EPEAT silver qualifications
- You can hook it up to your cable box and watch TV off it

I guess I should perhaps try out the things before passing judgment on them, but then again, how much fun would that be?
