HCMC, Vietnam 2004
Posted on 01.20.09 to Travels by JoanMy ex-boss and I went to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 2004. We were trying to set up a tertiary school and we went up to give a talk in one of the high schools there, and also met up with some agents.
Back then, I think we were very brave to have gone there without much knowledge of the place, people and system. I was given the huge task of getting in touch with a fixer and arranging for flights, accommodation and our meetings. It was a good learning experience then, which probably gave me the training to be a producer — it’s all about being resourceful and getting the job properly done.
I found some old photos that were taken with my first camera, which I bought — the Canon G5. As much as I don’t like the food in Vietnam, it was a really nice place to visit because the city has much character.

This restaurant was recommended in our copy of the Lonely Planet in 2004. And it was the best place we ate during our trip there. It was really hard to find – my boss and I trekked up and down the street a few times before we finally found this tucked away in a little alley.

There were more bikes than cars.

The people there were really adept with their motorcycles. Families of five could ride (seemingly) comfortably on it, and this man proves that taking a nap on it is not a difficult task either.
