HP Mini 1000

When Rebecca from Edelman contacted me about playing around with the HP Mini 1000, I was more than delighted to say OK.  Granted, I’m a Mac fangirl, but I’m not one to say ‘no’ when someone want to pass gadgets along my way.

It’s been ages since I last used a Windows computer, so I was a little excited to be reaquainted with the OS I first knew.

A photo from the webcam from the HP Mini 1000.

Right now, I’m posting from the P.S. Cafe at Dempsey Road, having a glass of iced tea and a slice of the infamous carrot cake, while waiting for Clare to finish school.  Yes, she still bawled this morning when I said goodbye, but the good news is, she isn’t averse to the idea of going to school.  She just doesn’t like me to leave.

When I first used this netbook, I was all hunched over it, squinting at the screen and fumbling with the keyboard. I kept on hitting all the wrong shortcut keys! After an hour, I was dizzy and my eyes and back hurt from staring at the tiny screen. It made me feel old.

However, I spent a few hours chatting and surfing on it last night, and I grew to like it a little bit more.

No doubt, I will always be a Mac enthusiast because I find the Windows operating system too sluggish, but it’s a great laptop to carry around. Today, I carried it to lunch and answered some work emails. It’s very light and handy, and I can chuck it into my handbag on days when I don’t carry my camera. It feels lighter than my camera even! I also like how it’s inconspicuous and doesn’t make me feel like I’m hiding behind a giant screen if I put it on the table.

Last year, Terence and I bought the eeePC because we thought it would be nice to have a small laptop to bring around to do work. But we sold it within two weeks because it was too small and the screen even worse. This HP Mini has a bigger screen without compromising on size, and the keyboard is significantly bigger too. I haven’t seen the new range of the eeePC so I can’t make a proper comparison, though.

Now, if only they had passed me the Vivenne Tam designed one instead. :) I’d carry it like a clutch!

Alright, I got to wolf down the last of my cake so that I can go pick up my little girl.

I really wish Apple would hurry up and make a netbook! Alternatively I’d have to buy a PC one and learn to rip out the OS and replace it with Ubuntu or something …

Next time you are going to Dempsey in the morning, let me know, we can catch up there. CNY week would be great!

I just got the HP Mini for the Hubs, now I’m a slave to Starhub for 2 years :D, I upped the ram to 2G, its feeling quite fast now. Don’t like the glossy screen, hard to read in bright places, I love the Vivienne version too though I don’t think Hubs would be carrying his like a clutch, hee hee.
