Mid-Night Puking

Her icky yucky second batch of medicine.
Clare’s fever spiked last night and she popped up at 3am suddenly asking for water. Shortly after, she puked twice. We had to change the sheets, clean her up twice, fed her more medicine, applied an ice-pack and hugged her to sleep.
I brought her to her pediatrician today and he says that she’s got a lung infection from her flu and cough. She was given more medicine again, which she utterly hates, but at least they seem to work better than the ones given by the GP we saw over the weekend.
She’s due for a follow up check-up on Monday and I seriously hope that she feels better soon. I was initially beating myself up for not breast-feeding her longer than the 11 months I did, and questioned how good my breast milk was when I was feeding her. She’s falling ill so often and it’s not as if she’s living in squalor or is undernourished.
But, a chat with my friend Junior last night put things into perspective (work related call that inevitably ended with talking about our kids, as it is with most parents). At least she’s running about, jumping around and is active. I ought to be worried if she’s listless. And the doctor did say that she is a young child and there are a kajillion strains of germs around. So well.
I’m forbidding visitors because I want this germ cycle to end.

stop beating yourself up. you should be glad that you have breastfed her.
no one said that breastmilk will keep your child from getting sick at all. I breastfed my son for 2yrs and he still get sick occasionally, just like most kids. it’s part and parcel of growing up.
so like your friend said, as long as she’s still active, you shouldn’t be too worried.
:)
Agree with Chloe. Breastfeeding for longer =/= illness proof. Kids are prone to getting bugs left right and centre. You can’t prevent that – it’s how they build up their immune system. It’s only going to get worse when they start entering playgroups/nursery school, but it’s part and parcel of them growing up, despite the trouble it causes parents! Banning visitors won’t stop her getting more bugs, you know that right, but it at least prevents your visitors from catching them from her!
Take care and good luck :) Don’t feed her so much medicine lah. Only need antipyretics for fever (only two types to give kiddies – paracetamol and/or ibuprofen) and antibiotics as appropriately indicated for the chest infection. Feed and water her well too – it’s equally if not more important than shoving drugs into her.
agreed, agreed. i only ‘breastfed’ Jasper for about 5 days before switching him to formula feeds. based on recommendations, Jasper should be sick as a dog right? nope, never had so much as a sniffle in his 11 months so far. (though i am sure as he gets more active, he is going to be eating germs like candy and getting sick more often).
you are doing so well for your daughter. kids pick up stuff all the time, it’s what kids do :P she’s a fantastic vibrant kid who gets bugs now and then. i think by taking her away from bugs you could possibly make her immune system weaker?
xx
