Lumpy
Posted on 06.02.08 to Clare, Parenting by JoanOne of the things I find hardest at being a parent is having to watch your child suffer through an illness or an accident. Parents, I really salute you. Even though my child has not been through anything major, the little bits are enough to make my heart break each time I see her cry or squirm in discomfort.
Clare had a fall last night. I think she adopted my clumsy genes. She slipped in the bathroom and fell on her back, hitting the base of her skull which resulted in a giant bump that was a nasty shade of purple, dotted with red spots.
I asked my doctor cousin if I should be sending her to the doctor and she said yes because it’s at the back of her head where the vital organs are, i.e., the brain, and a sign that it might be something serious is if I can’t even feel her skull through the bump. With the lump raised about 1cm high (it’s large in relation to the size of her head), I think it was cause for some alarm so we rushed her to the accident and emergency (A&E) department at KK Hospital immediately.
While changing into something presentable to go to the hospital, I suddenly burst into tears because all I could think was OMG!MYDAUGHTERHASAGIANTLUMP *pause* OMG!WHATIFSHEHASBRAINDAMAGE *pause* OMG!WHATIFSHEFALLSINTOACOMA *pause* OMG!IAMSUCHASHITTYMOTHER! And that only made her cry even further. I’m such a douche-bag sometimes, but I blame it on the imbalanced hormones that strike monthly.
Anyway, Clare is fine. She went for an x-ray (and was totally not pleased with being strapped dow) and the doctor said that there is no depression in her head, which might cause a blood clot. She said that there might be a possibility that there is a hairline crack that the x-ray did not pick up, but that it was normal and nothing we should worry too much about.
We crawled back home at 2am, after she spent a few hours terrorising the other sick kids with her constant wailing — she was in pain, and was dreadfully tired and traumatised. But I’m glad my kid’s alright. The doctor told me to monitor her for symptoms of head injury which are odd behaviour, drowsiness and projectile vomitting. She’s milling about the house, watching TV, and playing with the dogs and Terence, so I think she’s fine. Thankfully. Thanks for all the SMSes and messages of well-wishes. We really appreciate it! :)

I’m always get nervous when I see kids running around because I worry about them falling and hurting themselves.
Last year my son fell and cut his forehead. Luckily no stitches needed.
I totally understand what you were going thru. Well, my son inherited my husband’s clumsiness so I can blame him. ;)
Glad that Clare is ok.
