The Domestic Goddess (I Wish!)
Posted on 06.01.08 to Food by JoanAlright. I confess: because I now have a domestic helper who relieves me of the chores, I have rekindled my love for cooking. I kind of enjoy going to the market over the weekends (except for the waking up early bit), shopping for food and conjuring recipes in my head. I try new dishes over the weekend, and my helper serves up my favourites during weekdays. It’s absolutely wonderful coming home from a long day of work, to a warm home-cooked meal, that is somewhat reminiscent of my mother’s cooking.
I’ve been whipping up a mini storm in my kitchen the past few weeks, but always forget to take pictures to document my little creations. I always rush to dig in because my taste buds are screaming to satiate the imagery of the sensations of what the food would taste like.
With food, pictures always speak a lot louder than words, thus, I didn’t blog about culinary experiences from the past weeks. This weekend, however, I took on the somewhat herculean task of roasting a lamb (‘herculean’ to me because I never dared to take on the challenge of making a roast as it would be expensive meat to waste if I did something wrongly).
Before my sisters could dig into the meat (as they were watching it like vultures), I quickly snapped some shots so that I can finally mark this important milestone in my domestic career: I finally made roast lamb.

And it turned out awesome! On Saturday, I served up: roast lamb with mashed garlic on it, baby potatoes and cherry tomatoes; mushroom and crabmeat risotto; fresh garden salad with balsamic cream. (I’ve really got to thank Vanessa for mentioning balsamic cream in one of her recipes and because I was curious as to what it tasted like, ordered it from greengrocer.com.sg. It was absolutely delicious! It’s not as sour as balsamic vinegar and is a little sweet.)

The lamb was polished off instantly by my sisters, and I was a satisfied chef. Next week, chicken rice. I can’t wait! (I told my helper that soon she’s going to have to upgrade her size ‘S’ clothes to size ‘M’!)

Little tip about balsamic vinegars. They get sweeter as the grade gets a little higher. For cheaper vinegars, add a little honey. It gives a sweeter flavour!
