Cycling Comeback

Posted on 03.30.08 to Friends by Joan

Some three years back, Terence and I were trying to get into the whole cycling thing. We went to the Mandai trail regularly with my dad and his friends, and I had secret aspirations to be like the dudes from the Kranked videos. All that went downhill (pun entirely not intended) after we got engaged and we’ve not touched our bikes in about two and half years.

We sent our bikes in for a much needed servicing on Saturday at Hup Leong (I really love the service Gilbert gives – no nonsense!) and met up with some friends for an easy ride along East Coast Park this morning. (Coincidentally, Terence bumped into Angela when he picked up our bikes on Saturday evening and the two of them were too shy to say hello to each other!) When we wheeled our bikes to the shop, I was so embarrassed at the sorry state they were in – dirty, rusty, flat tyres – I really felt like a really bad bike owner. Am so glad they look spiffy now.

We rode 20km and since I didn’t feel the usual leg aches after the ride, I was mildly disappointed at not having exercised enough at the end of it. But, I was WRONG! After we got back, packed up and cleaned up, I was suddenly really tired and fell asleep in my dad’s massage chair while waiting to go out for dinner.

Terence, Nick and Ashley after our ride, not looking worse for the wear.

I’m feeling mildly worked out, and my butt is suffering from the obligatory cycling-related aches. I had a good ride and most definitely am looking forward to more regular sessions with my mates. (Janice, I’ll hope to be able to go on rides with you soon! ;) After I build up stamina!!)

During the ride, I was trying to keep up with this guy on roller blades who was going darn fast! I’m amazed at his fitness level, and found out from him that he blades two hours every weekend. I told him that he’s my fitness inspiration and that it was rather hard trying to keep up with him! To which he replied, ‘Don’t!’ HAHA!

I was a bit apprehensive about the ride today, as I haven’t touched my bike in ages. But after the ride, I’ve fallen in love with the cute little black-and-yellow bike all over again. She really is a beauty to ride as she’s super light and is just the right size for me! I really feel very lucky to have been given such a great bike from my dad.

Here’s an old picture of the bike, taken in 2004. I forgot to take a snap of my bike today. The tyres are just black now, as Hup Leong doesn’t have yellow striped road tyres.

You have a great looking bike there. A Cannondale, in matter of fact!

I had a friend who own one of such bikes way back in my secondary school days and I remember how we envied him owning a Cannondale. I heard it’s like more than $2k?

That aside, didn’t see Clare. Did she join in the fun?

Yeah!! You’re exercising!! Good on you! Muscle sore is good, it means your muscle’s growing.
