Dearest Clare,

You’re now a 14 month old going to 14 year old. You are extremely cheeky this month, often doing things that you know will get a reaction out of your dad and I. As in the picture above, you love going for our shoes. The minute we turn our backs on you, you’ll be at the shoe rack and pulling everything off with much gusto. Lately, you’ve taken to wearing my shoes, and I must say, you do it quite well. Your tiny feet are able to go clip-clopping away in either my leopard print flats or thong heels. I have you know, that shoe rack is currently unused because your father is tired of picking up after you all the time, especially after a long day at work!

Apart from appreciating shoes, you have started enjoying carrying bags. My bags, shopping bags, tiny bags we got for you… anything that has a handle, you’d thread carefully through your tiny little arms, raise your hands up and walk around. It’s pretty cute seeing you trying to act like a grown up. Sometimes it scares me, because it reminds me that you are growing up super fast.

And about growing up – we’ve now gotten you this kids-sized table from Ikea, which you love to sit at to colour. We’ve gotten you a Spot colouring book with crayons and you are often seen there now, colouring with both hands and occasionally watching cartoons too.

And dear Clare, despite the fact that we’ve stopped flooding you with Baby Einstein videos, you are still very much a tv addict. If at night, I turn on the telly, it is almost a guarantee that I’d fall asleep before you do. You’d be propped up against the pillows, with your giant bug eyes staring at the goggle box, often not blinking even!

You’re communicating with us even more these days. Again, you still can’t speak. Apart from calling ‘mama’, the only other intelligible thing you are able to say is ‘hi’ when we come back from work. But you know how to let us know what you want, particularly when you want to go for a walk, or if you want to eat/drink what we are eating, because anything just tastes better than your own food. However, you understand us pretty well and learn really fast. You can point out your nose, you clap your hands, you kiss us when we ask you to and you know how to show ‘me’ by patting your chest.

And the biggest change in you, this month, is that you’re a lot more sociable than before. You still get a bit shy when strangers talk to you, and you show that by pulling up your clothes, but you are fine when you interact with other children and you have a fine time running around. You laugh and talk to people more these days, and you’re pretty affectionate with them too.

We’re fast approaching the end of the year. Your dad and I are pretty excited spending yet another Christmas with you (because it is our favourite time of the year). This year, you’re at least able to appreciate the decorations and presents a bit more and I can’t wait to see your face when you open up your gifts.
Merry Christmas, my little one. I’m looking forward to spending so many more Christmases with you.
Love always,
Mama
