Totem X-Ray
Posted on 09.15.07 to Clare, Personal by JoanSotheby’s is having their last Southeast Asian Paintings sale in Singapore before it moves up to Hong Kong from the next sale onwards. We brought Clare down for a touch of culture, and Pas and I took a walk down memory lane of the good ol’ days when we were working during the sales years ago.
That’s Clare zooming right by my favourite painting of the lot. (I wanted her to stand in front of the picture but instead, she sat down and crawled away immediately!) It’s by this contemporary Indonesian artist called Agus Suwage and the painting is called, Totem X-ray.
The skull depicted in the picture is one of a pig actually, which symbolises the artist’s self-mockery. From a write-up of the artist I found online, the pig is a metaphor that represents corruption and greed. I was first very attracted to how it looked aesthetically – the colours, the numbers, the composition – and would really love to have it hanging on the giant empty wall in my living room.
I really like the artist’s works. Here are a few more interesting pieces I found online:
Yin-Yang
Pressure and Pleasure
Worship My Ego
Crossroad
Pinkswing-Park and the controversy [1, 2] that followed it.
The details for the sale tomorrow are:

[...] Joan and I decided to pop by Sotheby’s today for their final art auction/sale in Singapore. She got to see her Uncle Dex in action (looking spiffy in a suit, but too bad no pics), and lots of cool contemporary paintings (pics on Joan’s blog). [...]
