Motherese: Month Ten

My dearest Clare,

You’ve officially spent more time out of my womb than inside it now. I often think about the days when I called you Flipper (because we didn’t know your gender then and you flipped inside my tummy a lot) and am constantly amazed at how Flipper became you, the very cute and special you.

This month, I had a glimpse of what it would be like with you when you become a teenager filled with angst. This was a month of temper tantrums, which kind of tickles me for now because you look so cute when you’re trying to force yourself to scream and cry.

If I didn’t allow you to touch something, you’d turn around, look at me and burst into tears. All this while checking out whether I would do something about it. When you realise that those giant teardrops do nothing to dissolve my resolve, you force yourself to give it all you’ve got again till you get distracted by something else. By then, the tears and the crying would cease instantly, almost as if someone popped out your batteries or something.

You’ve also learnt the fine art of music appreciation. When your grandpa plays the drums, you’d either bop along with the music or you’d play with your version of drums on the cushions. This amuses your great grandma tremendously and she often claps and belts out her rhythm just to see you jiving along with her. I love the fact that you like music and I’m looking forward to singing and dancing with you soon, when you start walking.

Also, this month you had your first fall off the bed. We were trying to prevent it by teaching you how to get off it the correct way, which is to turn around and climb down legs first. You have yet to master it because you’re an impatient little girl (kind of like your mummy) and you’d scramble to get off as fast as you can even when your limbs are all tangled up. Which is probably what happened when we weren’t looking – daddy was in the washroom and I was asleep, thinking you were cuddling with me!

But you’re such a trooper little Clare. You cried for just a bit before you continued going about your daily business, exploring the house, playing with the dogs and playing with us.

And talk about play! Boy, do you know how to play now or what. Your eyes often light up with joy when you realise that we want to play with you, even when I want to do inane things like chewing on your fingers and toes, or blowing air onto your neck. You’ve learnt how to play peek-a-boo with the cushion or your blanket. And you’re now exploring your toys in other ways than finding out how it taste in your mouth. You play with shapes, put things in and out of boxes, roll balls or things with wheels around, make sounds by banging things together and are slowly learning to play with your cousins.

Your motor skills are improving so much. Just the other day, you were helping me pack my bag by picking things up and passing them to me or putting them in the bag. How very lovely of you! And you would wave bye-bye as hard as you can to everyone when you’re dying to go home.

I really can’t wait for you to grow up just a little more, so that we can do fun activities together. Like craft work, little outings, reading, singing, dancing and any sort of game you’d like to play with me.

I love you so much, my little bub. I always look forward to the end of the day when we’re both tired out from the day’s activities, because all you want to do is snuggle with me. And all I want to do, is snuggle with you too.

Love always,
Mommy
