Motherese: Month Eight

Vol 1, Issue 8

My dearest Clare,

I can’t believe that it has been eight months already. Everyday I look at you in amazement because I can’t imagine that eight months ago, I painfully squeezed your tiny self out of my body. You’re a big girl now – one who is able to sit on her own, walk around the house in her walker (and terrorise the dogs too!), climb up and down in the playpen, and crawl everywhere.

This month, your bottom two teeth poked out and I was more than delighted because it’s about time they made their grand appearance, after teasing us in your gums for so long. You were obviously not very pleased and constantly felt the urge to show it by latching onto my boobs and biting really hard. But it’s ok. I’m your mommy and I will put up with it. Enjoy them while you can though, because you only have about four months left before they become fully mine again.

You learnt the meaning of absolute joy when you are playing with the dogs. When Thunder walks by, you would squeal with much excitement, and the house will be filled with laughter when he licks you. You have no idea how much this warms my heart because the dogs are an important part of our lives and if you couldn’t deal with them, it would be really sad. I’m glad that the dogs love you as much too. Then again, with a face like yours, how could they not?

You thrill us everyday with your little achievements.

First up, your vain, self-loving personality encouraged your first word – Clare. Your name, my dear girl! Your dad and I are constantly guessing whether you’d say ‘mama’ or ‘papa’ first. Never in a million years would we expect you to skip the simpler words and jump straight into one with a consonant blend!

You have also learnt to blow bubbles. Except that oftentimes, they don’t come out as bubbles and you’d end up spitting on whoever you are facing. It’s terribly rude, my darling, but oh so very cute. It’s even cuter when I ask you to do it by demonstrating it, and you’d do it too!

And sometimes, you can stand on your own without holding onto something for more than one second. I can see the look of determination on your face as you concentrate on maintaining your balance. I hope this level of determination stays with you as you make your way through the challenges in life.

Also in this month, you caught your first viral infection. You had a fever and was absolutely miserable. You spent the whole day whining/moaning/crying and refused to be let go. It was definitely a test on my motherly patience!

My darling little daughter, (you’re still in the bottom 10th percentile of growth, by the way), I love you more than anything in this world. It has been a wonderful eight months, and I can’t wait for the next eight, and the eight after, and the eight after,…

Love always,
Mommy

Hey Joan,

Since we had already spoke over the phone (work related), thought I would just make myself known to you here! Clare is absolutely adorable! Hope she’s feeling better now from the viral infection.

Regards
Clare’s fan (of 8 months and more)
