Motherese: Month Three

Dearest Clare,
You turned three months two days ago and I was swamped with work and taking care of you to get down to it. I promise that this won’t be a common occurence (that I miss out on important milestones in your life) but it was a period of major adjustment for me, returning to work after a long break with you.

This was a month of smile and laughs for you. No longer do you smile at me because you are farting or peeing, but because you are genuinely happy about something. Every morning, you wake up and smile at me. Because of that, you turned me into a morning person as I look forward to see you beaming. Just a couple of a days ago, you laughed out loud while I was bopping around, trying to entertain you. I laughed out together with you and at that point, nothing else mattered except letting you laugh till your heart’s content.

You’re beginning to recognise faces and places. Your eyes follow me around the room when I potter about with errands. When we get out of the car, you watch us to make sure that we remember to get you from the back seat. When you see the unfamiliar, you stare real hard as if you want to commit as much to memory as possible. Best of all, the camera’s your best friend and you would instantly stop whatever you were doing – crying or fussing – and strike your best pose when you notice we’ve got one pointing at you.

Your teeth are budding now and we find you chomping on your hands all the time. You’ve learnt to suck your thumb, chew on it, chew on your fingers and my shoulder – anything else but the teething rings we got you. I can see the cute little teeth pushing through your gums and I often wonder how you would look like when your teeth come out and your hair’s longer.

We thought we had you all figured out, but your schedule got completely messed up the past few weeks. The good thing about it though, is that you still sleep through the night but during the day it’s been a horrible nightmare for me and mostly, your caregivers. I can’t figure out if you’re rejecting the bottle (again!) or that you’re generally irritable because of your teeth, but you would rather go hungry than drink from the bottle.
It breaks my heart to see you crying, not eating, and sleeping for extended periods of time. If I could detach my boobs and leave them behind for you, I gladly would! However, seeing as that option is an impossibility, we really have to tough it out with you and hope that eventually you’ll overcome the adversity.
As always, I thank the Lord for giving me YOU.
Love,
Mommy
